Prince Kuhio #315 Guest Book - Year 2004

Dec 23rd 2004

What a score this condo was for us. Thanks a ton for letting us stay in your beautiful condo. Last year we stayed at the Hyatt. We both agree that we would rather stay here anytime. This place has absolutely everything a couple could want. (The grill outside is awesome.) We will definately recommend this place to all our friends and acquaintenances.
Contrary to previous posts, I thought that the food at Big Save in Koloa, all things considered, was fairly reasonable. I thought Hanalei Bay on the North Shore was absolutely amazing. Bodyboarding there was def. worth the trip.
Thanks again, we hope to be back sometime soon.

It's hard to believe! The 63rd anniversary of the other tragedy. We have been here for this day for the past 5 years at 315. A perfect place for remembrance and reflection.
This year was chock full of memories and precious connections, especially with our island family at St. John's Eleele. Rita has been their organist for 4 Sundays every year. As the TV commercial says: These times are priceless.
And of course, our base and island home continues to be #315. The evening we returned and turned the key in the lock was a transport back to the paradise we had waited a year. The experience is over whelming!! We are back home!!
So today we say goodbye again. Each year is more difficult. But we will return (like that general fellow). Same time next year!

Mahalo! We had a great stay!
Your location is ideal and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the areas around this great island. I appreciated your help, Jack & Dorinda, in setting the rental up for us and then recommending the Garden Island Inn for our final night on the island. Heading for Oahu for our final 3 days here in paradise.
Again, Mahalo and good luck to you in your future rentals.

We were lucky enough to have 4 days in Kauai ... an extension of our Hawaiian trip which began on the Big Island to support a friend who competed in the Ironman.
The first day we drove to Kee Beach (and was offered some "bud" by local kids - very comical). Stopped by in Hanalei and Kapaa for a little shopping. Highly recommend Lemongrass for Sushi - try the "911" or "Lemongrass" rolls if you're a fan of raw fish. :-)
Visited the Kauai Coffee Co. - very good coffee and tons of burlap coffee gabs (good decor) for $6.
Took the Jack Harter Helicopter tour ~ 60 minutes. A little pricey but worth every penny! Our pilot Bill was phenomenal and he flies a lot so ask for him!
Also drove up to Waimea Canyon, make sure to drive up one way (552) and come down the other (550A). The views are amazing - second to the helicopter but still amazing.
After snorkeling in Kona (on Big Island), the snorkeling here was average - the fish were cool but not as colorful as Kona.
We also hiked to the Hanakapiai Beach from Kee Beach. About 4 hours roundtrip, but extremely cool views of Napali Coast. A piece of advice - wear old shoes (hiking or running). Ours were covered in mud by the end.
On our seafood off nite we hit the Brick Oven. Very good pizza.
Tonight is our last night and I think we'll hit the Beach House or Keoki's - not sure yet. The condo was awesome. The cross winds were amazing - A/C not necessary. Lots of clean towels - dishes - and some beach tools in the front closet (noodle & chairs were very handy)!
Having a kitchen and fridge were terrific - we also put all of our food in the fridge to keep away any critters, although we never saw any. We made sandwiches every day for our adventures and picked up most food at Walmart and Save Market (Lihue). Groceries in Koloa were ridiculous ($7/gallon milk!). WalMart does have great souvenirs - check it out before buying from street vendor. Also, Starbucks in Lihue was a nice treat - but you can't help but feel like a traitor for not having Kauai coffee so we only went once. :-)
Oh - bed was very comfortable and deck furniture was used multiple times daily. Thank you so much for such a safe, comfortable and clean hideaway! We're headed to Oahu for 2 days and then home. :-(
We will tell all of our Hawaii-bound friends about #315 Prince Kuhio!

We've been here for 9 days and loved it! Shipwreck beach is very pretty. North Shore, Secret beach we also enjoyed. Our favorite was traveling West as far as you can go, Polihale Beach, what a lovely sight, not for swimming, too rough.
Waimea Canyon is a must see, spectacular view. Took a ride on the Lucky Lady to the Napali Coast, now that was a blast! Coconut Island on the East Coast had some great food.
For sunsets we liked Marriot Hotel, Cabana Beach Bar.
The stay here was great, the washer and dryer was a plus, the view and trade-winds are awesome! We enjoyed the BBQ grill and swimming pool and loved the garden!

Thank You!

Our first trip to Hawaii and we really enjoyed our stay here. This journal is a great idea and we got so many helpful hints on what to do, where to go, and where to avoid.
Saw chicken traps for sale and briefly thought about re-locating Rocky.

Thanks for this beautiful launch pad !!!

Some discoveries we made during our week in paradise...

  • Mt. Kahili is an amazing climb - but only for those with a *very* good life insurance policy!
  • Yoshi gives great surf lessons for beginners (via Nukumoi's)
  • If you hike in a chunk of mozzarella Bob might bake you a pizza along the Napali Trail!
  • Bussful quiet of P. Kuhio Park outside our balcony & wake up to Rocky the rooster
  • Breakfast bottom-trowng at Eggberts while sipping their beautiful Kona coffee
  • 6000 feral pigs just one island over
What more could you want?

We have been coming to Kauai for 20 + years and have stayed in #315 several times. It's great! Good location for snorkeling and sunset watching right across the street.
The easiest in/out of the bay is between the 2 street signs - there is a less rocky area across from showers. Go to one of the Farmer's Markets and feast on the local produce. Try Sunday mass at St. Raphael's for a real aloha experience - you can buy aloha wear and gifts at WalMart - nice to very reasonable.

Enjoy!

Aug 31 - Sept 5 2004

Spent the first half of our h-moon here at 315. It is our first trip to Kauai, and Poipu proved to be a great start. We thought the unit was a very spacious and comfortable home base. We enjoyed waking up to the sunrise and roosters and eating our fruit, yogurt, granola, breakfast (which we prepared in abundance the first day) on the lanai.
Our favorite swimming and chilling beaches were Kawailua and Killin's at the end of Poipu road past the gates and dirt roads. Our favorite snorkeling beach was right across the street. We also enjoyed glass beach near Hanapepe - especially the surf caves just E of glass beach.
We liked the Beach House, of course. We liked Pizzetta for a laid back atomsphere. Bit of a younger scene. The Sashimi and poke to go were great at Koloa Fish Market. Keoki's Paradise Cafe is a place to avoid on Fri. night if you like fast service. Camp House Grill in Kalaheo good for reasonably priced and large b-fast. Stevenson's Library at the Hyatt is a nice place on Sat. night - jazz, nice atmosphere, and opportunity to stroll the Hyatt grounds and watch the weddings and receptions.
We took two hikes - the Pihea Alakai Swamp Trail was a good hike for shade and cloud cover and fog (which helped with the first day burn), but didn't offer much in the way of vistas due to the clouds. The Nualolo Awaawaphui loop was amazing and strenuous. The Nunlolo lookout was one of the most beautiful vistas (if not the most beautiful vista) we have ever seen.
On to the North Shore - thanks for making a nice and reasonably priced place available to us!

Aloha,
Amy and Dan Royalty
Seattle, WA
P.S. Wear lots of sunblock you first day on the beach. The Hawaiian sun is killer!

Aug 19-30, 2004

Enjoyed 11 days in Kauai. Movie Tours was a real treat. We did the 4wd version. Great way to see portions of the island you'd never get to on your own. Best food - Casa di Amici. Most over rated - Tidepools at Hyatt, food good but service exceptionally poor.
Hiking Waimea Canyon was time well spent. We did Awaowapuhta and Waipoo Falls. Best sunset from Baby Beach, right nearby (it protrudes father out than Beach House restaurant). Best snorkeling right here at Beach House, had a close encounter with a monk seal. Best things about the condo - location, washer & dryer - hope to return again.

What a wonderful location. The condo was very comfortable. Enjoyed having all the beach equipment. We had considered staying at one of the resorts, but I would definitely choose "315" over them.
The garden is awesome. Hopefully, we will be back in the future.

  • Make sure you have your key before locking the door.
  • Capt Andys Boat Tour was exceptional.
  • Pizettas - over priced and tasteless. Pick up a frozen pizza.

We hate to leave -

July 17-24, 2004

On our first visit to Kauai we enjoyed the spacious condo. Going across the street and sitting on grass in front of restaurant to enjoy sunsets and surfers was pleasant.
Perhaps it was the surf conditions but our favorite activity, snorkeling seems to have fallen off over our years visiting the islands. Kauai is certainly the most beautiful island. Recommended beaches in the South - Poipu Beach all around at Breneckes for Boogie Boarding. In the North - Hanalei Bay and beyond. For dining - Bubbas, Poipu Beach Broiler.

P.S. Had a bad experience with Air Kauai - pilot was great but sat on the left side despite our objections and our pictures were not good!!

July 6-14, 2004

Mahalo Jack, Dorinda, & Mark!

We have had an amazing 9 days! The condo has been our perfect home away from home. We had everything we needed and more. The only thing we would've liked to have is snorkel gear but we were happy enough to rent. We had so many great experiences! Our favorite adventure was air snorkel tour with Napali Explorer (Zodiac boat) - for the adventurous! We saw so many dolphins, turtles and fish!
We also loved our daytrips to the canyon and Princeville. Golf at Poipu Bay Kiahuna and the Makai course were all great (Kiahuna was our favorite - only $45 at twilight). The luau at the Hyatt had good food and a good show but not authentic. Dinner at Tidepools was delicious. All the beaches we visited were great. The pool at the Hyatt is the best. The Stevenson Library at the Hyatt has great jazz and atmosphere in the evenings - not to be missed.
We live in paradise in Breckenridge, Colorado but we are sad to be leaving this 2nd paradise. We can't wait until we get a chance to come back here. We love that all shoes are "slippers"!

Aloha!

June 12-19, 2004

We had a fantastic trip to Kauai! We recommend:

  • Wailua Kayak Activities. Go at 7AM (not afternoon, river is busy).
  • Scuba - Bubbles Below
  • Hike the Waimea Valley
  • Ahi at the Beach House
We don't recommend:
  • The luau at Gaylords
  • Tomkats for breakfast

Thanks for the great room, we enjoyed our sunrise chicken!

Mahalo much for providing such a spacious and well furnished condo. It was more than we had expected. Jack & Dorinda - it was a pleasure to meet you and share a sunset at the Beach House lawn with you. Jack, mahalo for responding to my mail. Your phone call and helpful hints (especially the use of the book).
With mixed feelings we live Kauai today - sad to leave such a beautiful island, but anxious to see what Maui has to offer (somehow I think this will be the best and most memorable part of our trip).
For those just starting your stay, there's lots to do without an "official guide or tour group". The canyon was spectacular and definitely worth the trip. It's an easy half day adventure (AM); take the Waimea Canyon Rd, not Koke'e Rd. - great lookouts (stop and enjoy them all). A ride to Mahaulepu Beach is another must (thanks Jack for this tip). Follow Poipu Rd to end and travel the very bumpy graven road (approx 3 miles) to beach parking lot. There are no facilities but absolutely beautiful beach and surroundings. The Makaweli Cliffs (accessible at end of Shipwreck Beach) are also worth the trip - sorry we didn't find them earlier in our trip. Shipwreck Beach appears to be less rocky (although we didn't actually swim there).
Restaurants were ok - we ate at Keoki's Paradise (Poipu Shopping Village); food was good, as well as service, nice Polynesian atmosphere. Don't waste your money on Poipu Beach Broiler - food and service both mediocre - not worth their prices!
The Beach House is a must - especially for a special occasion. Call days in advance if you want to specify day and time. Great food, service and ambience (expensive but worth it).
We golfed at the Makehuana Course at Kauai Lagoons - so, so - Very distracting as the airport runway parallels some of the fairways; also the flight path for helicopter tours. The Kukuiolono Golf Course appears to be a local favorite - but we were skeptical about what one gets for a $7.00 round of golf!
Two things you must have while here:
(1) a pancho. It rained everytime we set foot out doors. Usually brief showers but we did get caught in a downpour while exploring the cliffs and returned drenched.
(2) The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook by Doughty and Friedman. Great book more informative than Frommers!
Enjoy your stay!

P.S. The NaPali Coast is another must see. We did a Sunset Cruise with Blue Dolphin - great crew!

We have had such a great time staying here in Poipu at this condo! Everything provided for us here has been very accommodating and has made our honeymoon very relaxing. We are definitely gonna miss "living" here, with the island breezes, warm water, beautiful beaches, laid-back lifestyle, friendly people and great food. We definitely recommend eating at Keoki's Paradise down the road one mile - the food was great, reasonably priced, and has the most tropical atmosphere. For food to go, you have to try Pizzeta, located in Koloa Town. Their hot and cold sandwiches rock! Also, Taqueria Nortenos has great Mexican food - something we've missed since we left Orange County.
As far as beaches go, every spot we visited - and we've been all over the island - has been awesome. If you want to go snorkeling, you won't have to go far. The beach right outside, next to the Beach House restaurant, has so many fish and an awesome reef. If your looking for a sandy beach, travel up the west side to Kekaha, or go South-East to Nawiliwili Harbor. Another place to visit - not only for its sandy beaches but also for its awesome views - is Hanalei Bay and the pier. Its definitely good for a day trip and you will be very pleased. If you do decide to travel up to Hannalei, go all the way until the road ends to Ke'e Beach. There you will encounter another great beach but also stunning views of the Napali Coast.
We had the most incredible honeymoon here on Kauai and we hope everyone who stays here has the same experience. We hope this info was helpful to you. We will be back again!

Mahalo & Aloha -

P.S. Listen to 95.9 - "Surf Radio" when you're here - they have great island music.

Well it's our last day here and it will be hard to leave! This was our first time here (Hawaii & Prince Kuhio). Everything we did and saw was beyond our expectations. The condo was nice and clean, spacious, breezy and comfortable. Anything we needed in the condo we were able to find which was really a plus (especially the washer and dryer). After hiking, beaching it, site-seeing, it was great to come back and relax on the lanai and soak up the breeze and the smells of the ocean. We truly enjoyed #315, and what Kauai had to offer. We will be back and won't hesitate to stay here again!

Thank you so much Jack, Dorinda, & Mark!

10:00am - 4/16/04

My sister Gwen and I have been here since April 9, and it has been delightful... almost like being at home! Drove around most of the island, saw the canyon, Hanalei Valley (so pretty!), went to a Luau. We had dinner at the Beach House last night - it was very good - but pricey! Today we go on a tour of the Na Pali Coast. We leave on Sunday. I go back to Calif and my sister back to Alaska. We had everything we needed here - very neat and clean. This is our first time to Kauai and we won't forget it.

12/27/03 - 1/3/04

We are have a great time!!!
Although we arrived in time for the Kona to roll in - so we had a few rainy days but as one local told us "hey! don't let the rain slow you down, you gotta do what you gotta do!" :-) We planned our trip mostly by the 4th ed. Untimate Kauai Guide Book by Friedman & Doughty - and felt the directions and descriptions were accurate. Fell in love with Tunnels Beach in the North, became a little "star struck" seeing Pierce Bronson, Keith Richards, and Craig T. Nelson hanging out on the beach (also great for snorkeling and excellent views!). Queens Beach in the West was nice and private, excellent waves and awesome surfing (or to watch). Keoki's Paradise and Roy's Poipu Bar & Grill had excellent food. Found the Beach House food mediocre, but the atmosphere to be pleasant. Bubba's Burgers - great for greasy food that's quick. Went for a helicopter ride - recommendation - don't pay extra to stop at a private water fall, not worth the $, the H2O is too cold and muddy to swim in and who wants to be soaking wet in a windy helicopter, but great views of the island.
Love the condo, washer & dryer a plus, everything here was as expected - comfortable & cozy - be sure to put all of you food in the refrigerator - we had some uninvited guests :-) . Thanks to all who made our stay what it was - the time of our lives - Mahalo!!!

Celebrating our 1st wedding anniversary P.S.
To the "nasty" 4th entry - they should count their blessings that they were able to be here to enjoy this island and just being able to come proves they have never been as unlucky or unfortunate to have even have stepped foot in a welfare project - sometimes you have to stop and look and appreciate all you have been given - life comes easier this way.
