Prince Kuhio #211 Guest Book - Year 2005
Dec 1 - Dec 8, 2005
Aloha Jack & Dorinda,
Thank you so much for sharing your condo. We had a fabulous time.
The weather was great and the beaches very impressive.
We used the Untimate Kauai Guidebook a lot and found hidden trails,
beaches and water falls that we would have missed. Our favorite
was Queen's Bath - it was a spectacular sight. We also checked out
several beaches on this shore, the East Shore and the North Shore.
We like the Poipu Beach the best for swimming and snorkeling.
Your condo is very homey. It felt like home-away-from-home. We
appreciated all the little extras, i.e., beach gear, cooler, mats, etc.
We have enjoyed our visit tremendously and hope to return some time in the
future. Kauai Vacation rentals was great to work with and was very
accommodating.
We hate to leave this paradise and return where the weather is
hovering at 5 degrees and several inches of snow! Once again, thanks
so much! You have a great place.

Oskaloose, LA
P.S. The waimea Canyon was also an awesome sight.
11/10 - 11/17
Aloha Jack & Dorinda,
It was sort of coming home. We were here 37 years ago when my husband
got R&R from Vietnam. In those days, there was only one traffic light
in Lihue. Things have changed but not the beauty and the fresh air.
We enjoyed your condo and beach so much we only took one trip up to
the top of the canyon. All other planned trips lost their priority,
we just enjoyed the condo, deck and beach.
We had 2 great meals at Pizetta, one pizza and the 2nd night shrimp
fetucini and lasagna. Brennecke's had a great shrimp scampi but
a terrible Opa meal. Enjoyed a nice dinner at Beach House and
enjoyed watching sunsets there.
Everything is perfect here - the air, the water and the condo. We
won't wait as long again before we come and will definitely come
to your condo.

Your place is very comfortable, relaxing, great location, beautifully
landscaped - and on and on ... thanks so much for sharing this spot
with us.
We both had a fabulous week and we will return.

It would be hard to list anything new that others before us
have not mentioned. What we do want to say is relax and appreciate
your time spend on this beautiful island. Time goes so fast and with
a lot to see, enjoy it at a relaxed pace, enjoy the friendly people,
the beautiful plants and trees, the birds, the mountains, the beaches,
and the fresh air.
Of course, we have recommendations like everyone so here is our short
list:
Garlic Shrimp lunch (green van just down the road), Waimea Canyon
(take a hike), NaPali. Take the road to the end (mile post 16) and
hike to view point. An easy walk. The hike pst is a little more
adventurous and worth every minute. Kee Beach and the hike was also
great. The snorkeling and the surf at your door is some of the best
we found and you do not have to drive. Barbque (Ahi) mmmm. Monk
Seals, Sea Turtles, and thousands of fish are all here to swim with.
Monday's at noon in the ball park inn Koloa is the Farmer's Market.
Show up a few minutes early because that is a part of the experience.
We have one day left and a late night tomorrow evening. The
beautiful island and the slow pace has left us calm and ready to enjoy
ourselves when we go home.
Jack & Dorinda
You have a great place and you have equipped it to meet the lucky
visiter's needs. Thank you very much!

Aloha Jack & Dorinda,
Many thanks for allowing us to rent your lovely condo at
Prince Kuhio. We had been planning this trip since January
and when exploring the web for accommodations came across your
web site. Your condo lived up to (and was better) than all
the pictures. When I spoke to Jack sometime in March he said
"you're gonna love it" and guess what "we really love it"!!!
We had great fun reading your journals and agree with all the
nice things everyone had to say. We also found that some of
our most memorable things are: Sunrise and breakfast on the
lannai (we didn't miss one), The Waimea Canyon - awesome!
Helicopter trip with Air Kauai - our pilot really excelled
himself, lunch at Keoki's where I had my first Mai Tai. Tomcats -
great burger, hanging at the pool and for our last nights dinner
at the Beach House. Everything has been perfect including the
weather - no rain at all.
It is a long way from Ontario (where it has been cold and wet all
week) but we would love to make the trip again.

Janet & John Torrens

P.S. Thanks and best wished to everyone at KVR, we found them
very helpful
9/17 - 24/2005
Jack & Dorinda,
What a great place to stay - we had a wonderful time exploring
the island from here. We had great meals at Roy's and the
Beach House, over cooked fish at Keoki Paradise.
Good burgers at Poipu Tropical Burgers.
Great snorkeling at Poipu Beach and in front of the Beach House.
Not many fish at the beach north of Shipwreck Beach (at the end
of the bumpy road).
Fabulous helicopter tour from Air Kauai - great way to see the
beautiful island.
Thanks for a great place to Stay.

Aloha Jack & Dorinda
Thank you for sharing your lovely condo with us. such a change
from our high sierra home. We really enjoyed the simplicity of
Prince Kuhio and your home. Small (but plenty of space for 2),
super neat and clean. The BBQ and pool are always so clean and
available (hats off to KVR!).
My wife and I read all of the previous entries with interest.
If you just got here and are reading this, do the same. There
is a lot of common sense in these pages vis-a-vis what's a
rip-off and what's not. We highly concur with the comment about
the macadamia nut cream pie in Koloa Town :-)
- Big Save is Koloa has best grocery choices for the lowest prices.
- Gas (ouch!!) Went from 3.09 to 3.36 for the low end stuff. Pitty
all these fools who rented caddies and town cars!
- The Kaua'i Revealed" book is fabulous. Heard about it on the
mainland, but could only snag the Mau'i and Hawai'i books. Used
to swear by Lonely Planet, but no more!
Your tile job is fabulous! We've done a lot of remodeling ourselves
and were very impressed with your work!
- Trades have been nasty all week. Mostly > 30 MPH, but still plenty
of sun.
This trip is my wife's "reward" for enduring the hell of Chemo therapy,
Radiation, surgery and recovery process from breast cancer in 2002. When
she laid there in that recliner while they injected her with oisons, I
kept telling her, "hang in there baby, and you get Hawai'i." So - this
has been a very special trip for us - for what it's worth, we decided to
do Hawai'i on the simple - No helicopter rides, boat trips, etc. etc.
We drove the island and hiked everywhere. There is so much to see, but
if you read the Kauai Discovered Guide carefully, there are so many
places you can go to and be alone with your best friend. Don't let
all the glitzy adds fool you.
This is an amazingly beautiful place, and the best way to see it is
up close and personal with your best friend! One new "secret" for
all future readers: Best sunset view. Go up to the lookout station at
the top of Waimea canyon late in the afternoon and do the hike jto Pu'u
Okila. On the way down, at mile marker 14, hang a right on "Makaha
Ridge Road" (it's on the map on Page 82 of Kauai Revealed). Follow
the road almost to the bottom. Just before the tracking station, there
is an up-hill (left-side) turn-out that leads to a power pole, there are
rocks you can sit on, and you get a vista view of the pacific, Niihau
and the sunset all alone! Plus the canyon across the road at sunset
rivals the Grand Canyon in AZ and at Yellowstone Park for the wild
colors. Also, listen carefully, and you can hear the wild goats in
the canyon. Again, thank you so much for the 1st week of our
wonderful vacation.

Aloha
We've read through your guest book and enjoyed hearing all of the
tips and info so thought we'd add some too! We started out our
1st week at a bungalow in Wailua Valley and are now on our second
week here in your lovely condo! (Much cleaner and less bugs in
this area of the island). We were married last Sunday and had the
backdrop of the beautiful pacific as we said our vows! Some of our
favorites of the trip:
Food:
Brick Oven Pizza (amazing crust!), Fish burrito at Tropical Toco
(Hanalei), Bull Shed in Kapaa (great lobster - low key atmosphere),
Brennekes (salad bar and sweet taro rolls), JJ Broiler (upstairs -
salads) Great Scallops in garlic/capers linguine, Breakfast - Eggberts
(in the Coconut Market Place Kapaa). For reasonable prices - Chinese
Restaurant in Kapaa next door to Starbucks in Safeway Center. Still
waiting to do a few nice dinners here in Poipu. Most reasonable
groceries - Safeway in Kapaa
Things to see:
Queens Bath - This was one of our favorite outings. Natural swim pool
in the rock near the surf - turtles in and along coastline nearby,
pretty lite waterfalls, places to jump from rocks into ocean if you are
gutsy like my husband.
Lookout at the end of Kokee Road (we kept driving and almost turned around
but view worth it)
Church service at Lutheran church in Lihue - young girl playing guitar,
music in Hawaiian & English, friendly pretty little church.
Road from Hanalei to Ke'e beach and all of the beautiful beaches along
the way (try avacodos from little stands along road - they are yummy!)
Captain Andys Sunset Snorkel Dinner Cruise along Napali. Worth every penny
- great crew, awesome food, beautiful views, dolphin, turtles, baby
dolphins, snorkeling below the cliffs - we loved it. Can't say enough
about it.
Don't Recommend:
Anini Beach - could have been a weird day but sketchy folks - felt
unsafe, remote, had some local men making comments that gave us a
general feel that it wasn't a safe spot.
Bubbas Burgers - Super Greasy (although the chili rice is good)
Foodland in Kapaa - overpriced compared to other stores.
Although we are here and it is Hot, Hot, Hot, the condo is wonderfully
airy and we love the breezes! Thanks for sharing this lovely place
with us.

Aloha Jack & Dorinda,
We have very much enjoyed our five days on Kauai - a perfect
place for our "second" honeymoon and our 5th anniversary.
Your place was the perfect base camp for all of the
activities that we were able to fit into our relatively
short stay, and at night with the breezes coming in through
the lanai and the sounds of the ocean in the background, we
were able to experience complete relaxation. While here on the
island we spent time at Poipu Beach, Mahaulepu Beach,
Kalapaki Beach, Lydgate Park Beach, Ke'e Beach, and Hanakapiai
Beach. We hiked in Waimea Canyon and along the Kalalau Trail
along the NaPali Coast, we visited the Waipoo Falls (in Waimea
Canyon), the wailua falls (of Fantasy Island fame), and the Opaekaa
Falls. And in thers of evening relaxation and sunset cocktails,
we highly recommend the Beach House across the street (which
seems to be a universal recommendation of everyone that stays
here) and the Back Patio of the Stevenson's Library Bar at the
Hyatt Regency. We have two things yet to do before we leave the
island this evening - go see Spouting Horn just down the street
and take a helicopter tour with Air Kauai (probably should have
booked this earlier in the week, but I had to convince the wife
to do it first). On a final note, your Ultimate Kauai Guidebook
was very helpful compared to our Frommers Book.
Now that we have seen the island and a glimpse of what it has to
offer, we will definitely look forward to returning to your place
in the not too distant future - this time with our 20 month
old daughter who we left at home with grandma and grandpa for this
trip.

Aloha Jack & Dorinda,
Finally I made it back, I thought this day would never come,
but at last! First off Mahalo for working with me on this
trip. I felt bad when I had to cancel im March with such
short notice. I appreciated your understanding, my daughter is
doing very well, again mahalo.
Your island home seems to be like a bottle of fine wine. Year
after year it just keeps getting better, the new tile floor is
outstanding as are the new table, chairs and drapes.
Spend all 10 days just relaxing, no running around. Just time
at the pool, beach across the street, first time to see a
Monk Seal on the beach (eat, swim, sun yourself on the beach in
paradise, boy wht a life!). BBQ every night. Enjoyed the
sunrise and sunsets. With the help of the aloha spirit, the days
and time just seemed to melt away. 10 days has come and gone and
I'm thinking next years trip is going to be longer. 10 days is
just too short!
Until next year, Mahalo for sharing your home, hope all is well with
you and Dorinda.

We have been planning this trip for years. We chose Kauai because
we knew it would be just the perfect place to spend our 20th
anniversary. Your charming condo made our celebration all the
more enchanted. We had everything we needed ... thanks for
anticipating our every need!
Favorite things: Sunrise on lanai and a cup of Kauai Coffee,
sunsets at Beach House lawn (also great place to see Monk
Seals), swimming and HUGE sea turtles at Ke'e Beach, Grilling Prons
and fresh fish, fruit from farmers mkt and the stand outside of Koloa,
Smith Family Luau, Kayak Tour and Kayak Wailua, the view of the
Waimea Canyon (the drive down was pretty tough on this prone-to-get-
motion-sick Gal. Uugghh!
We loved going to church at Koloa Church. Beautiful old church
full of nice people.
Thank you for sharing your island paradise. We will be back and
we will bring our children ... every person on the planet should
experience this annointed place.

Jack & Dorinda,
Truly the garden isle. We really enjoyed your delightful home.
We felt at home as soon as we walked in. The flow thru breeze
is great and the gardens are inviting. Enjoyed breakfast and
cocktails on the lanai daily and the sunsets across the street.
We have not been to Kauai for almost 20 years and really enjoyed
seeing old places again. thank you for sharing and hope to return.

What a wonderful time here in paradise! Truly amazing.
Have seen so much and will see the rest today by helicopter.
We're here together, best friends since kindergarten celebrating
our "52" birthdays. Laughing our way across the island. Will
definately be back!

Dorinda and Jack,
Six delightful days on Kauai, residing in your spacious,
comfortable and inviting island home. We have enjoyed
- Pink and gold sunrises from the bedroom
- Brisk walks to and from the Sheraton for lattes and
morning paper
- Tete a tete breakfasts and dinner on the lanai
- Stroles in the lush garden, and swims in the pool
- acquaintance with the imperial Koi who reside in
the pond year 'round
We want to thank you for a delightful stay. May we come again?
Best Wishes,
Pierre and Mary Lou Van Rysselberghe
P.S. Another thought, this is our 50th wedding anniversary year!

Aloha,
Thanks for the use of the condo, it was great! We enjoyed the
lanai and our dinner at Casa de Amichi (very good, but was hard
to find). It was very windy on the 10th and 11th. Our time here
was too short, but would recommend your condo to anyone. The
people here on the island were very kind to us.

Aloha Jack & Dorinda,
Thank you for sharing your "bit of paradise" with us. What a
lovely change from our 12 foot of snow we left in Ohio. We
found everything we had anticipated and more. We enjoyed the
beautiful sunsets, gorgeous falls and most of all just relaxing
by the pool. The one suggestion is that we had a hard time
reading in the evenings - perhaps more lights or stronger bulbs
are needed - a favorite part time for us is reading in the PM.

Aloha Jack & Dorinda:
Thank you so much for sharing your "home away from home" with us!
Your web site is extremely well done but your condo still exceeded
expectations. We felt completely at home as soon as we arrived. The
flow-through air is great. Park and garden views and the ocean surf
view is beautiful. During our 2 weeks we've enjoyed most of the
activities other guests have described. We had planned on eating
all of our meals out but found we enjoyed those breakfasts on the
lanai and BBQ fish from the market for dinner many times more than
planned (potatoe salad from Sueoka's is terific!).
You did a great job with the floor - may I suggest tile for the lanai??
Dinner at Shells (Dungeness crab legs) was a treat, as well the
Ilima Terrace was excellent. Hanalei's shave ice was way better than
JoJos' in Waimea.
We've had 3 rainy days out of 14 so we're happy! Great vacation;
thanks again... We'll be back!

Aloha Jack & Dorinda!
It's been a "WOW" week! From seeing your condo the
first time "WOW", to our helicopter ride "WOW", to the
great dinner at the Beach House "WOW", and our last day
all alone at a secluded beach "WOW"!
You have a great place and we definately want to stay here
again. We love the location, the sunrises from the bedroom
(haven't missed one!) and our breakfast on the lanai! It's
everything we hoped for and more ~ the internet pictures do
not do it justice.
Mahalo!
We have had great weather arriving just after the "big storm".
Every day has been sunny and beautiful ~ seen every sunrise
& sunset. The only times we were in rain were when we traveled
to Princeville and Waimea Canyon. Poipu is the sunniest, especially
this time of the year.
Everyday we packed our convertible w/a lunch, beach gear and "The
Ultimate Kauai Guidebook" and tried to find beautiful, uncrowded
places. We love this area because it is quiet and not so "touristy".
We were surprised at how many places we found that were not crowded,
especially during the holiday season. But our week went way to fast
and some of the roads were impossible (Polihale) because of all the
water from the storms.
Here is our list of our absolute favorites (things we'd do again):
- Inter-Island Helicopter ride - 2 hr w/the waterfall stop -
awesome, beautiful & a great way to see the island w/o the traffic!
Ask for "Marty" ~ he was a great pilot!
- Dinner at the Beach House - celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary
~ great food, etc. Wished we would of skipped "Smith's Luau" & ate
here again - about the same cost!!
- Maha'ulepu Beaches - Good winter beach especially Kipu Kai beach
~ seals, isolated - all alone except occasional fishermen ~ Beautiful
- it's a hike but worth it (bring backpack & supplies).
Well, its 4AM - still on MN time - have to go back to bed and wait for
the sunrise and then pack to leave :-( Loved our trip and your condo
a great 25th anniv. trip.

Happy New Year Jack & Dorinda.
Your condo is so warm and friendly. Our brother and sister-in-law
were staying at the Kiahuna Plantation. Ours is so much better.
We fixed dinner at their place last night. They did not even have such
things as salt and pepper. I love that there are NO locked cabinets
here. You share EVERYTHING with us.
Only a few good golf days. We never did get to see the sunsets from
the Beach House. But did see the most spectacular, wild storms from
the Beach House. Both Tuesday and New Years evening, when we were
there for dinner. Thunder, lightning, wild waves - incredable!! We
were treated to magnificent sunrises though. Five feet of snow at
home in the Sierras - so we are not complaining.
If you ever get to Grass Valley, CA (beautiful area) give us a call.
Would love to meet you in person. Gene suggests the fish market at
Koloa old town. mmmm good!
